Run with the Best - The book, mentoring program and athletes
Run With The Best
Written by Tony Benson & Irv Ray the book was published by Track & Field News USA in 1998 and was an instant success. Comments to the effect this was the best coaching book "I have ever read" were common and led T&F News to request an second edition - which was published in 2001. It remains a best seller and a third edition is under consideration.
The Mentoring Program
On December 1st, 2005 EPS introduced an "Athlete Mentoring Program" open to any athlete of potential international standard who has read "Run With The Best'" and agrees with the coaching philosophy. The basis of this program is that we agree to take an interest in, and to act as a 'mentor' to, developing athletes. Its not a coaching role but rather a support role where any assistance asked for is given. Conditions do apply and anyone who believes they might qualify should contact Endurance Performance Systems (EPS). The first person offered this assistance is Lindsey Ellen Scherf. See below.
Lindsey Ellen Scherf
After reading RWTB, Lindsey contacted Tony for more detailed information about the RWTB philosophy in July 2005. She is currently coached at Harvard University in the United States by Frank Haggerty, the Head Coach for XC and Track, and has a 32:51 10k runner. In December 2005 Lindsey ran a 15:42 indoor which was a 27 second PR to become the All Time 2nd fastest American Junior and is just 6 seconds off of the fastest American All Time. EPS congratulates both Lindsey and Frank on this fine achievement.
Kate is a 2006 Commonwealth Games representative in the marathon. Coached by the national distance coordinator Shaun Creighton, Kate is working with Tony to improve her technique.
